PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Penn State Beaver women's softball team split the day against Carlow University on Tuesday night.
The Lady Lions struggled in game one, going scoreless in the first four innings while Carlow put up six runs (6-0). Sophomore Natalie Larkin (Center Twp./Central Valley) helped Beaver earn its only run in the first game at the top of the fifth after she batted-in freshman Taylor Johnson (San Antonio/ East Central) while Carlow earned one more run in the bottom of the sixth, handing Beaver a 7-1 lose in the first game.
But the Lady Lions even the score by winning a nail-biter in game two. Beaver started off the game scoring in the top of the third after freshman Tyler Johnson (San Antonio/East Central) batted-in senior Brittany Zahn (New Brighton) with two outs on the board (1-0). The Lady Lions' defense kept Carlow's batters at bay during the opponent's next three turns at bat to hold a one-run lead at end of the fifth. In the sixth, with Tyler Johnson on third and freshman Michelle Cisco (Churchville/C. Milton Wright) on second, Senior Brenna Cepull (Monaca/Central Valley) singled-in Tyler Johnson to give Beaver a 2-0 advantage. With the bases loaded, Zahn was hit by a pitch, which prompted senior Brittany Garza (La Feria) to run home from third (3-0). The mood of the game shifted in the bottom of the seventh after a Carlow batter hit a two-run homer with no outs in the inning to bring the score to make it a one-score game at 3-2. However, Carlow was unable to tie the game before collecting a third out, and Beaver took a 3-2 victory in game two.
Cepull led the way for Beaver in the second game, hitting 2 for 3 and earning 1 RBI followed by Tyler Johnson, who went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI.
Senior Vanessa Jackson (Snohomish) was on the mound for Beaver in game two (W, 14-1-1), where she pitched a complete game, allowed only two hits and struck out six of the 26 batters she faced. She has a current ERA of 1.24.
Beaver is now 21-9 overall for the season and 10-2 in the PSUAC conference.
The Lady Lions will be on the road Friday against in Penn State Greater Allegheny in a PSUAC doubleheader on April 12. Game one is at 2 p.m. followed by game two at 4 p.m.
