Beaver Falls to Schuylkill in Final Game of PSUAC Tournament
After falling to the losers bracket with their loss to Penn State Brandywine on Sunday, Beaver would face off against Penn State Schuylkill in University Park as the PSUAC tournament comes to a close.
University Park, PA -- Penn State Beaver softball team took the field in University Park for a tough game against Penn State Schuylkill. Beaver comes into this game off of a tough loss to Brandywine the previous day that bumped the Beaver girls into the PSUAC tournament's losers bracket. However, with a win in this matchup the team would find themselves in the PSUAC championship game, while a loss will be the end of a great season for the Beaver softball team.
Coming into their game against Schuylkill, Beaver was looking to rebound from a sloppy loss to Penn State Brandywine where the team committed 2 vital errors that hurt them in the end. In the second inning of this matchup, it was Schuylkill that struck first as they put up 4 runs to jump out to a quick 4-0 lead. After pulling their starter, Beaver was finally able to stop the bleed as Sophomore Jessica Hughes (Hopewell, Pa / Hopewell) was able to get the last out of the second inning as well as letting up no runs during the rest of the game. However, Hughes' performance wouldn't be enough as Beaver struggled to put runs on the board during the rest of the game.
In the top of the sixth inning Beaver was able to score their only run of the game, as Freshman Kayla Campbell (Waynesburg, OH / Sandy Valley) was able to get an RBI, 2 out single to bring the game to 4-1 going into the final inning. However this wasn't enough for Beaver as they would be unable to continue their momentum from the previous inning and they would end up losing this to Schuylkill game by a final score of 4-1.
With this loss, Beaver is eliminated from play in the PSUAC tournament and the end of their season. However, Beaver is still eligible and likely to make the USCAA national softball tournament. The bids will be announced later today and the team stands a very good chance of garnering an invite. We will update this story with more information as soon as it is available.
