Thiel
Monaca, PA -- Beaver Opens At Home with 0-2 Loss
By: Chris Rotondo
The Beaver Lady Lions opened their 2018 home season Saturday afternoon when they took on Thiel. The back-to-back games saw Beaver going 0-2 against Thiel.
Beaver got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning after a Dina Cable walk in her at bat. She would eventually score on a sacrifice fly by Kayla Cambell to give Beaver a 1-0 lead. After a scoreless second, it was Dina Cable again leading to the run with a sacrifice fly, scoring Brittany Garza, who reached on an error in her at bat to give Beaver a 2-0 lead at the end of the third inning.
Thiel quickly shifted the game in their favor with a 3 run fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead. They expanded their lead to 5-2 after scoring 2 runs in the top of the sixth.
Beaver was poised to make a comeback in their final at bat as the first four batters reached safely to load the bases. With bases loaded, Brittany Zahn hit a single to score 2 runs to narrow the Beaver deficit to one run. With a runner still in scoring position, Brenna Cepull unfortunately grounded into a double play to end the inning, as Beaver fell by a final score of 5-4.
Leading the offense in the first game of the double header was Vanessa Jackson, who went 3 for 4, and Brittany Zahn, who went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs.
In the second game of the double header, Beaver struggled defensively, giving up 4 runs in the first, followed by another 6 in the next two innings, to trail 10-0 after three innings of play. In the bottom of the fourth, Beaver tried to get their bats going, as Jess Hughes had the lone hit of the inning to right field, but it wasn't enough to put a run on the board. Thiel extended the lead in the top of the fifth inning to 14-0. Despite a Dina Cable double to left field, Beaver wasn't able to generate any offense and fell by a final score of 14-0 after five innings due to the mercy rule.
Beaver now sits at 3-7 overall and will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. in a double header with Kent St. - Tuscarawas.
