Beaver Picks Up First Win of 2018
Myrtle Beach, SC -- Beaver opens 2018 season with a win against Penn State Schuylkill.
As the Lady Lions opened play on the 2018 season this afternoon in Myrtle Beach, they faced PSUAC foe Penn State Schuylkill. In the top of the first, Brenna Cepull hit a one-out single and would later score on an RBI single by freshman, Kayla Campbell to give Beaver a 1-0 lead. Schuylkill answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own. The score remained 2-1 until the fourth inning when Beaver's first two batters in the inning reached safely to get into scoring position for Jessica Hughes who hit an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.
In the fifth and sixth innings Beaver added a run in each inning to take a 4-2 lead heading into the seventh inning. The final inning of the game would prove to be an exciting one as Beaver took advantage of a pair of errors from Schuylkill to load the bases. Carley Schroeder, who reached on an error, earned 2 RBI's on the play as Brittany Zahn and Kayla Campbell both scored to increase the Beaver lead to 6-2. In the very next at bat, Brittany Garza singled, earning her first RBI of the season, as Natalie Larkin crossed the plate to extend the lead to 7-2. With the final half inning to be played, Schuylkill kept things interesting as they opened the inning with three consecutive hits. With hot bats, they were able to put up four runs, but their late surge wasn't enough for Beaver's defense as your Lady Lions hung on to the win, 7-6.
Leading the Lady Lions offensively in the game was Jessica Hughes who went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's. She was followed by Vanessa Jackson who also went 2 for 4. Carley Schroeder was tied with Hughes in the game in RBI's with a pair herself.
Earning her first win on the mound was Jackson who threw a complete game, giving up 7 hits and striking out 5.
In their second game of the afternoon, Beaver will take on Hagerstown C.C. at 3:30 p.m.
