Monaca, Pa -- The Penn State Beaver softball team hosted a Monday doubleheader against Penn State Greater Allegheny. The team has played very well in conference play so far and looks to continue rolling coming into their games today.
Game one of the day started off with Greater Allegheny taking an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Beaver came out of the gates slow offensively, managing only 3 hits in the first four innings. Sophomore Vanessa Jackson (Snohomish, WA / Snohomish) pitched a great game after the first inning, not giving up any more runs and striking out 9 throughout. It was in the bottom of the fifth inning when Beaver finally got on the scoreboard, putting up 3 runs thanks in part to a 2 RBI triple from Senior Jenna Petrucci (New Castle, PA / Shenango). Beaver would put up another run in the bottom of the sixth to boost the score to 4-1 as they took home a win.
Game two on the day went much more smoothly for Beaver, as they didn't let up a run in the five innings it took for them to pull out a win. Freshman Torrey Cassidy (Hinsdale, NY / Portville) was on the mound to start this game, as she went 5 innings while only letting up 6 hits while striking out 6. The team's bats were alive throughout this game, as they totaled 14 hits through 5 innings. In the first two innings the team rallied to score 9 runs to jump out to a lead that wouldn't come close to being lost. There were 6 players for Beaver that would tally an RBI in this game, as they would eventually go on to win by a final score of 11-0 in 5 innings.
After winning their games against Greater Allegheny, Beaver now sits at 15-12 overall with a 13-3 conference record. The team has been playing well against nearly every conference opponent they've faced, and will look to continue that in the upcoming PSUAC playoffs. Beaver will take the field next on Saturday, April 22, at Penn State Greater Allegheny. Game one is set to start at 2 p.m.
