Mont Alto, Pa -- The Penn State Beaver softball took to the road for a doubleheader against Penn State Mont Alto, their first games away from home this season. Beaver comes into these games after losing two tough games against Grove City just 24 hours before. Jumping back into conference play, Beaver looks to stay undefeated with two big road wins.
In game one, both Beaver and Mont Alto came out to a slow start as neither team would score for the first four innings. Both teams had opportunities to score early on, but neither were able to knock in runners when it counted. In the top of the fifth inning, Beaver got on the board first by plating one run off of a single by freshman Lacey Weible (Hookstown, PA / South Side). After their breakthrough in the fifth inning, Beaver kept it rolling by scoring two more runs in the sixth inning and five more in the seventh to take an 8-1 win. Beaver was led in this game with strong performances by senior Jenna Petrucci (New Castle, PA / Shenango), who went 2-4 with 2 RBIs, and sophomore Vanessa Jackson (Snohomish, WA / Snohomish), who pitched all seven innings while only allowing 1 run while striking out 6 batters.
Game two of the day was a dominant showing by Beaver, as their bats were hot from the start of the game. Beaver jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning, and continued to add on to their lead in every inning but the third inning. During the game, every batter but two for Beaver had at least one hit. After six innings played, Beaver finally ended up taking home a great win by the final score of 11-2. The team was led in this game by the efforts of sophomore Brittany Garza (La Feria, TX / La Feria), who went 2-3 with 3 RBIs while scoring 2 runs herself.
After sweeping Mont Alto on the road, Beaver now improves to a 6-9 overall and 6-0 in-conference record. Beaver has looked great so far this season in conference play as they look to head right back to the PSUAC playoffs this season. The team will play again on Saturday, April 1, at home against Penn State Mont Alto. Game one is set to start at 2 p.m.
