The Penn State Beaver softball team started off their second day in Myrtle Beach with a matchup against a familiar opponent in Grove City College. After going 0-3 in the first day of their trip, Beaver came into this game hoping to imporve a little and take home their first win of the season.
The game started off quiet on both sides for the first few innings. Thanks to a good pitching perfromance by Sophomore Vanessa Jackson (Snohomish, WA / Snohomish), who allowed only three hits in the first four innings, Beaver kept this game very close through the first four innings. However, in the top of the fifth inning, Grove City broke this game open by scoring three runs to take a 3-0 lead and ruin an otherwise outstanding start by Jackson. It was in the bottom of the sixth when Beaver finally got their bats going, scoring one run quickly and getting another runner on third base with 2 outs. With the pressure on her, Torey Cassidy (Hinsdale, NY / Portville) came in to hit, popping out to third base and ending Beaver's chances of coming back in this game as they would lose by a final score of 3-1.
The Beaver girls played well in this game, losing their fourth straight to open the season by a small margin. The came out of the gates with some good pitching by Vanessa Jackson that kept them in the game for the first four innings. In the end, it was Beaver's inability to wake up their bats that killed them in this one, as they once again find themselves trying to make a late inning comeback.
