North Myrtle Beach, SC -- The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions kicked off the 2017 campaign with a triple-header on Tuesday.
In game one, Beaver took on a tough opponent in Division III Randolph College at 11:30 a.m. Beaver got on the board first by plating one run in the first inning on a two out single by Brenna Cepull (Monaca, PA / Central Valley), scoring Lacey Wieble (Hookstown, PA / South Side) who doubled to lead off the inning. In the bottom half of the first, Randolph answered back with three runs of their own, taking a 3-1 lead. In the top of the second inning, Carley Schroeder (Freedom, PA / Freedom) scored on a fielders choice hit by Dina Cable (Mannington, NJ / Salem County Vo Tech) to bring the game to 3-2. However, this is as close as Beaver would get to taking back the lead, as Randolph ended up scoring twice in the third and fourth innings, holding on for the 7-2 win.
Game two of the triple-header was a much closer game than the final score would look. For the majority of the game Beaver's bats were silent, only registering 3 hits for the contest. Robert Morris Springfield would control the lead from the start, scoring one in the third, two in the fifth, and five runs in the sixth to invoke the mercy rule and shut out the lights for Beaver as they would lose by a final score of 8-0.
In the final game of the day, Beaver took on NAIA opponent Ohio Christian. Beaver played their best game of the day in this one, out-hitting OCU 8-5. However, even with 8 hits, Beaver was unable to score against a really tough opponent and ended up losing their third game of the day by a final score of 3-0.
After going 0-3 on the opening day of their 2017 season, The Lady Lions will return to action on Wednesday, playing Grove City College at 9 a.m. and Hagerstown CC on 11:30 a.m.
