The Penn State Beaver softball team traveled to Latrobe for a doubleheader against Saint Vincent's College. Still looking for their first win back home after traveling to Florida for spring training, the Beaver girls come into this one looking to knock off a tough team in Saint Vincent's.
The first of the two games started at noon and Beaver didn't come out looking too strong. In in the second inning they let up 4 runs to the girls of Saint Vincent's, which turned out to be the lead that they would hold to the end of the game. Although, Beaver did see a spark in their bats in the fourth and fifth innings as they were able to scratch out a run in each inning. But even with the spark, Saint Vincent's was able to put the nail in the coffin by tacking on another run in the sixth inning putting the game just out of reach for the Beaver girls as they lost by a score of 5-2.
The second game of the doubleheader started at 2 as Beaver's girls looked to split the series with Saint Vincent's. The story was the same in this game as Beaver started off slow and Saint Vincent's jumped ahead early, this time scoring all 7 of their teams runs by the fourth inning. Beaver was able to come to life a little, answering with a run of their own in the fourth inning but by that point they were too late as they ended up losing by a score of 7-1.
The girls struggles early in this season seemed to continue today as they stranded a total of 13 runners today while only mustering up 10 hits. There were good showings on the day from Beaver, as Rachael Charlier (Burgettstown, PA/Burgettstown) went 2-2 in the first game with a walk while Sarah Foose (New Bloomfield, PA/West Perry) contributed with 2 RBIs of her own. The girls will take the field again on Tuesday as they will be taking on CCBC for the first home doubleheader of the season. The first game is set to start at 3 p.m.
