Monaca, PA – Beaver drops two close games to Penn State Brandywine.
Sunday afternoon, Beaver hosted Penn State Brandywine for a PSUAC double header. Game one was a constant back and forth battle as Brandywine opened the scoring in the top of the first, putting up two runs. Beaver was quick to answer with three of their own in the bottom of the second, coming off of a 2 RBI double from Brittany Phillips (Aliquippa, PA/Aliquippa) and an RBI single from Nicole Bowersox (Penns Valley, PA/Penn Valley). Brandywine answered with three runs in the top of the third, but Beaver again rallied to score five in the bottom of the inning coming off of 5 hits including RBI singles from Rachel Charlier (Burgettstown, PA/Burgettstown), Phillips and Myranda Robson (Rochester, PA/Rochester). With the score 8-5 in favor of Beaver heading into the fifth inning, Brandywine added a run (8-6), and then both teams played solid defense until the seventh inning when Beaver's pitching could no longer hold off the offense of Brandywine who scored three runs to regain the lead, 9-8, which would be the final score of the game as Beaver was not able to answer in the bottom of the inning.
All nine batters for Beaver had at least one hit in the game including doubles from Lauren Pier (New Brighton, PA/New Brighton) and Phillips as well as five players earning at least one RBI.
Game two had a very different start as Beaver jumped out to an early 9-0 lead by the end of the third inning thanks to consistent hitting at the top of the order including doubles from Rachel Borrell (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East), Pier and Jenna Petrucci (New Castle, PA/Shenango). In the fourth inning, Brandywine finally got a run on the board which Beaver answered (10-1), but Brandywine, in desperation mode, dug their way out scoring three runs in the fifth, one more in the sixth and then in the seventh put up an impressive seven runs to take their first lead of the game (12-0). Beaver, now playing with a sense of urgency, was able to get within one on a sacrifice fly by Larson to score Robson, but they couldn't even the score and fell by a final score of 12-11 in a heartbreaking loss.
Leading the offense in this game were Larson who went 4 for 5 with a double and Petrucci who went 4 for 4 with a home run and double.
Beaver is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday when they host Carlow University.
