Monaca, PA – Beaver splits with Penn State Schuylkill Saturday afternoon.
On Saturday afternoon, Beaver played host to cross-state rival Penn State Schuylkill. In game one of the double header, after giving up an early run in the first inning, Beaver played solid defense and in the fourth inning opened up the scoring. With senior, Lauren Pier (New Brighton, PA/New Brighton) on base, sophomore, Taylor Larson (Beaver, PA/Beaver) homered to put the Lady Lions up by a score of 2-1, but in the sixth inning Schuylkill answered with two runs of their own (3-2). Despite their best efforts, Beaver wasn't able to overcome the one run deficit and fell by a final score of 3-2, dropping them to 1-6 in the PSUAC.
Larson was the stand out offensive player in game one with the homer, and Rachel Charlier (Burgettstown, PA/Burgettstown) from the mound only have up three hits and one earned run.
Game two saw a much different outcome with all but two of the Lady Lions earning at least one hit in the match-up. Beaver came out with their bats on fire in the bottom of the first inning putting up a quick 5 runs, giving them a 5-2 lead and then continued to score in the second inning. With Rachel Borrell (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) on first, Pier doubled to put two runners in scoring position. After Larson took a walk to load the bases, Charlier hit a 2 RBI single and then with the bases loaded for a second time, Brittany Phillips (Aliquippa, PA/Aliquippa) hit a sacrifice fly to score the third run that inning putting Beaver up 8-2. Again in the third, the Lady Lions came out swinging, adding an additional two runs on an Asia Borders (Ellwood City, PA/Ellwood) single (10-2). In the top of the fifth inning, Schuylkill managed to keep themselves in the game putting up a run, but Beaver quickly answered in the bottom of the sixth with a run of their own, and with the 8-run rule in effect, won the game in the sixth inning by a final score of 11-3. This win upped their conference record to 2-6.
Leading the offense were Borrell, Pier, and Larson who all went 2 for 3 including doubles by Pier and Larson. Four players also tallied 2 RBI's a piece (Borders, Charlier, Petrucci and Phillips). On the mound was sophomore, Kristen Macom (New Brighton, PA/New Brighton) who earned the win.
Beaver returns to action tomorrow for a noon start as they play host to Penn State Brandywine.
