Monaca, PA- The lady Lions of Penn State Beaver won their first game of the 2014, defeating Penn State New Kensington 13-8. In game two, New Ken downed Beaver 13-4.
In game one, New Kensington scored 3 in the second and 1 in the third to take a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, Senoir Lauren Pier (New Brighton, PA/New Brighton) hit her first home run of the seaon, a grand slam, to cap off a 5 run inning to take a 5-4 lead. New Kensington responded with four runs of their own to take a 8-5 lead. It was all Beaver from that point, as Beaver put up five more in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to win the game 13-8. Offensively, Beaver had a season high 15 hits. Winning pitcher Rachael Charlier went 4-4 at the plate, driving in three and scoring one run. Pier finished 2-4 driving in 6 runs. Freshman Asia Borders (Ellwood City, PA/Lincoln) went 2-4 scoring three runs and driving in two.
In game two, New Ken scored early and often on their way to a 13-4 route. Beaver's lone bright spot was Freshman Jenna Petrucci (New Castle, PA/Shenango) hit her first career collegiate home run.
The lady lions will be back in action on Saturday, April 12th, at 2 p.m. when they host Penn State Schuylkill.
