Akron, OH - The Penn State Beaver softball team wrapped up a successful season on Wednesday, finishing 5th in the 2012 USCAA Small College World Series.
In game one of the day, an elimination game, Beaver took on #5 seeded Briarcliffe College. Briarcliffe took an early 2-0 lead in the first, scoring on two hits and an error. Beaver answered in the second. Freshman Myranda Raymond (Brashear/Pittsburgh, PA) led the inning off with a single. Junior Korey Freyermuth (Perry/Pittsburgh, PA) sacraficed bunted Raymond to second. With two out, Senior Jamie Karpinski (Quigley/Beaver, PA) had an RBI single to bring in Rayond, and put the score at 2-1. Briarcliffe added one run in the fourth making the lead 3-1. Beaver was unable to get anything going from that point, mustering only one hit the rest of the game. For the game, Beaver had 3 hits. Freyermuth took the lost, pitching six innings, giving up four hits, two earned runs, walking one and striking out six. Briarcliffe advanced 3-1, as Beaver moved to the 5th place game.
In game two, the fifth place game, Beaver once again met #2 seeded Lindenwood Belleville, but this time, the results were different. Beaver struck first again, scoring two in the third. Freshman Nicole Bowersox (Penn Valley/Penns Valley, PA) led off with a single. Senior Lindsey Scialdone (Ellwood City/Ellwood, PA) drove in Bowersox. Scialdone later scored on a fielder's choice by Raymond. Belleville tied the score in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on back to back triples and a ground out, to tie the score at 2-2. Belleville took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring one run on two hits. Down but not out, Beaver rallied in the seventh. Freshman Rachel Borrell (East Downingtown/Downingtown, PA) led off with a walk. Pier singled, moving Borrell to third. Scialdone then singled, tieing the game, scoring Borrell. Pier scored the woud be winning run on a Raymond RBI fielder's choice. Freyermuth retired Belleville in order in the 7th, to hold, and give Beaver 5th place. In the win, Scialdone led the offense with three hit, scoring one run, and driving in two. Freyermuth pitched a gem in getting her 25th win of the season, throwing 7 innings, giving up five hits, walking one and striking out two.
On the year, Beaver finishes 26-18 overall, 17-1 in the PSUAC, PSUAC regular season champs, PSUAC Champs, and 5th place in the USCAA.
