Monaca, PA - The Lady Lions split a doubleheader with the Thiel College Tomcats on Saturday.
In game one, Thiel built an early lead, scoring two runs in the first and one in the second to build a 3-0 lead. In the third inning, Beaver got on the board, scoring two runs on a few walks and two Tomcats throwing errors, and cut the lead to 3-2.
However, Thiel responded with three more runs in the fourth to build a 6-2 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, back-to-back doubles by freshman Lauren Pier (New Brighton High School/ New Brighton, PA) and junior Jamie Karpinski (Quigley Catholic High School/ Beaver, PA) brought Beaver back within 3 (6-3).
Pier led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, and Karpinski and senior Kayla Chambers (South Side High School/Hookstown, PA) followed with bunt basehits. With bases loaded, sophomore Alyssa Carver (New Brighton High School/New Brighton, PA) and sophomore Korey Freyermuth (Perry Traditional Academy/Pittsburgh, PA) each drove in two runs with singles to give Beaver their first lead of the day.
In the final inning, Chambers induced two groundouts and struck one out to secure the 7-6 victory. On the day, Freyermuth, Pier, and Karpinski each recorded two hits while Chambers pitched seven innings, giving up five earned runs, eleven hits, and no walks while striking out seven.
In the second game, the Tomcats scored all three of their runs off of the long ball, hitting a solo shot in the second and a two-run variety in the fourth. Beaver didn't get moving until the seventh inning. Freyermuth led the inning off with a single, and freshman Myranda Raymond (Brashear High School/Pittsburgh, PA) followed with an infield hit to bring the tying run up to the plate. With one out and two strikes, Pier launched what looked to be a game-tying three-run home run, but Thiel's centerfield caught the ball at the fence and threw to second to end the game at 3-0.
In the loss, Carver threw seven innings, giving up three earned runs off of six hits and two walks while striking out three.
With the split, Beaver remains at .500 with a 5-5 record. The women will take the week off and return to action at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 26 when they travel to Grove City College.
