Myrtle Beach, SC - The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions (1-1, 0-0 PSUAC) offense came alive in their second game of the day to rebound with a 6-4 win over Penn State Berks.
Beaver scored their first run of the year when junior Lindsey Scialdone (Ellwood City High School/Ellwood City, PA) drove in junior Ashley Watkins (Seneca Valley High School/Cranberry, PA) with an RBI single up the middle in the first inning. Beaver upped its lead to 2-0 when junior Jamie Karpinski (Quigley Catholic High School/Beaver, PA) scored on a Berks error in the second inning.
Beaver added three more runs in the fifth inning as Lauren Pier (New Brighton High School/New Brighton, PA), Korey Freyermuth (Perry Traditional Academy/Pittsburgh, PA), and Myranda Raymond (Brashear High School/Pittsburgh, PA) all had base knocks in the inning. Raymond also added two RBI's to give Beaver its largest lead of the game at 5-0.
Berks mustered some offense in the sixth inning as Brittany Hicks launched a two-run homer, capping off a three-run inning, but Beaver added another run in the seventh as Karpinski drove in Scialdone to give Beaver a 6-3 lead.
Berks (0-2) scored a lone run in the game's last frame, but Freyermuth came in to relieve starter Alyssa Carver (New Brighton High School/New Brighton, PA) to earn the save and seal the win for Beaver.
In the win, Raymond went 2-4, which included a double and 2 RBIs. Scialdone scored two runs, stole one base and an RBI. Pier and Freyermuth each had two hits.
Carver pitched 6 1/3 innings in the victory (1-0), striking out eight batters, walking none, and allowing just one earned run in her first appearance of the season.
