Myrtle Beach, SC – The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions were down early to Penn State Berks, and their comeback fell just short, 4-3, at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Beaver was down 3-0 early in the first inning as Berks hit a two out 3-run homer to put Beaver in the early hole. Berks added an unearned run in the second with two outs to put Beaver at a 4-0 deficit.
The Beaver hitting attack finally awoke in the second inning as they scored three runs, all with two outs. Junior Jamie Karpinski (Quigley Catholic High School/Beaver, PA) scored freshman Lauren Pier (New Brighton High School/New Brighton, PA) with an RBI single. After a Berks error, senior Jessica Bartges (East Allegheny High School/North Versallies, PA) launched a 2-RBI double to centerfield for her first collegiate hit. Bartges' double closed Berks' lead to 4-3.
Sophomore Korey Freyermuth (Perry Traditional Academy/Pittsburgh, PA) came in the fifth inning to finish the game for the Lady Lions on the mound. Freyermuth pitched three innings of scoreless, one hit ball in relief. She also struck out four Berks batters.
However, Beaver couldn't find any more offensive production from the third inning on, falling 4-3 to Penn State Berks. Beaver left eight players stranded, including runners on first and second base in the seventh.
Chambers dropped to 1-2 on the season allowing 3 earned runs and striking our four Berks hitters.
With the loss, Beaver falls back to the .500 mark (3-3, 0-0 PSUAC) and will face Penn State Altoona at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, March 10.
