Beaver Takes two From Franciscan

Monaca, PA - The Penn State Beaver softball team defeated the Franciscan University Lady Barons in both games of its double-header, first by the score of 20-5, and again 11-2.
In the first game, the Lady Lions were up 10-3 at the top of the 3rd, when Beaver exploded scoring 9 runs pushing game one out of reach for the Barons.
For Beaver, Freshman Ashley Watkins (Seneca Valley High School/Cranberry Twp., PA) batted 3-4, with two doubles and had 6 RBI's. Senior Alonna Verrico (Rochester High School/Rochester, PA) had 3 RBI's, and Freshmen Kori Freyermuth (Perry Traditional Academy/Pittsburgh, PA) and Lynsey Szymarek (McKeesport High School/Pittsburgh, PA) each had two hits. Verrico and Freyermuth both homered in the win.
The winning pitcher was Penn State Beavers junior Kayla Chambers (South Side High School/Hookstown, PA), who pitched 5 innings and had 9 strike outs.
In game two, the Lady Lions quickly jumped off to an 8-0 advantage, and ended the game in 5 innings, defeating the Lady Barons 11-2.
At bat, Sophomore Katie Landis had a home run and drove in 4 RBI's. Watkins and Freyermuth each contributed one home run apiece as well as 3 RBI's.
Freshman Alyssa Carver (New Brighton High School/New Brighton, PA) was the winning pitcher for the Lady Lions, pitching 5 innings and striking out 4 batters.
Beaver is now 9-14 overall, and tomorrow, Saturday, April 10, will host its conference opener at 2 p.m. vs. Penn State Schuylkill.
