Lady Lions Drop Close Game to Lady Vols
Titusville, FL - On Tuesday, March 9 the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions softball team dropped its second consecutive game of the season, 3-1, to the Lady Volunteers of John A. Logan Community College (Carterville, IL).
Senior Sam Neely (Northgate High School, Pittsburgh, PA) took the mound for the Lady Lions and kept a runner stranded on third to get Beaver out of an early first inning jam. The Lady Vols struck first with a two-out rally in the second inning as Beaver allowed an unearned run which gave Logan a slim 1-0 advantage.
However, in the bottom of the third, Beaver answered as freshman Chelsea Barnes (New Brighton High School, New Brighton, PA) earned an infield hit and stole second base to get into scoring position. Sophomore Lindsey Scialdone (Ellwood City High School, Ellwood City, PA) singled in Barnes to tie the game at 1-1.
The Beaver lead didn't hold for long, though, as Logan scored two-out runs in both the fourth and fifth innings after Beaver retired the first two batters each inning. Freshman Kory Freyermuth (Perry Traditional Academy, Pittsburgh, PA) came in relief and kept the Lady Vols bats in check. The Lady Lions had an opportunity to make the game close when they loaded the bases in the sixth, but their late rally fell short.
Scialdone went 2-3 with two singles, and Barnes went 2-4, scoring Beaver's only run.
At 3:00 p.m. today, the Lady Lions, now 0-2, face the Lady Cougars of Kalamazoo Valley Community College (Kalamazoo, MI).
