BEAVER FALLS, Pa.— The Penn State Beaver men's soccer team hosted Johnson & Wales (NC) University on Saturday evening and fell 3-1.
Beaver finished with 11 tries, seven SOG, six corner kicks and two assists in the match. Senior Romaine Thompson (Philadelphia/Penn Wood) scored Beaver's only goal in the game.
Freshman Brennan Schultz (Kane/Kane Area) served as goalie for the first 28 minutes of the game and had five saves against five SOG. PSUAC Goalie of the Week freshman Julian Hauff (Frederick/Governor Thomas Johnson) served as the goalie for the last 61 minutes and had four saves against seven SOG.
In the first period, the teams played each other tough, forcing the first half to go scoreless. But at the 52nd minute, the Lions made their way toward Johnson & Wales' box, where sophomore Danylo Yakymov (Kiev/Grand Private Lyceum) attempted a header but it was too high. In the next minute, Thompson fired-in a goal right in the back of the net on an assist by senior Darrion Gilmore (New Brighton) and sophomore RJ Long (Atco/Winslow Township). But the tides quickly shifted for Beaver, as the men of Johnson & Wales drove down to Beaver's box less than two minutes later and answered back with a goal of their own to tie the game at 1-1, which they then followed up with another scored goal under a minute later to take the lead at 2-1. At 60th minute, Beaver found themselves in a 3-1 deficit as Johnson & Wales, once again, launched another ball in Beaver's net. Despite some scoring opportunities, the Lions couldn't connect in the remaining minutes of the match and fell to visitors 3-1, taking their second loss of the season.
The men will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 10, where they will face Point Park University on the road. The game begins at 4 p.m.
