Defiance, Ohio – Men's soccer team faced off against Westminster on the road, failing 0-8.
In their second game of the Defiance Tournament, Penn State Beaver headed back to compete against Westminster on Saturday. After last night's loss against Defiance College, Beaver looked to bounce back by earning their first win of the weekend tournament.
The game began strong for Beaver, with an early shot attempt by Beaver's midfielder, sophomore Joey Pail, in the first 49 seconds. Senior Samuel Sharpless stood tall at goalie; however, Westminster responded swiftly and managed to get past Sharpless, scoring a goal less than a minute later. Three and a half minutes into the game, midfielder, freshman Williams Cruz, unleashed two corner kicks within one minute of each other. Beaver's offense remained aggressive; at the seventh minute of play, junior Shelton Hilliard attempted a shot but was to no avail. As the clock winded down on the first period, Westminster got hot and scored three more goals, leaving Beaver down 0-4 at the end of the first half.
In the second half, in an effort to stop Westminster's scoring streak, Beaver tweaked their strategy by putting Jordan Herzog at goalie. However, Herzog was unable to stop Westminster from scoring three more goals, and Sharpless was sent back out to field with Beaver down 0-7. As the end of the game drew nearer, Beaver's defense faltered, and Westminster scored their last goal with less than a minute left in the game, leaving the final score 0-8 for the day. Despite a valiant offensive effort earlier in the game, Beaver ended the day with their second loss for the week.
With their record now 0-2, the men's soccer team returns to the road on Thursday, September 6, where they will play against Westmoreland County Community College at 5:00 p.m.
