Overtime pushes Beaver to Victory against Christendom
Beaver’s Men’s Basketball team took on Christendom in the annual Holiday Tournament and were victorious in overtime play.
Monaca, PA – In Penn State Beaver Men's Basketball fashion, the team took their opponent into overtime for the third time this season, and fourth if you count pre-season. Penn State Beaver took on Christendom College in the Beaver Fieldhouse for game 1 of the annual Penn State Beaver Holiday Tournament. Beaver was down by 2 going into the half and battled their way back in the second half to tie it up before the final buzzer. After tying it up, Beaver had a hard 5 minutes in front of them and were successful by outscoring their opponent by 5. In the first half, Beaver started slow, scoring almost a full 3 minutes into the game was First-year, Ronyell Coston (Eastern Shore, VA) scored first off, a layup. Coston brought the score to 5-5 very quickly with another layup and a free throw. Beaver took a lead for the first time this game at 15:53 when Second-year, Alex Green (Chicago, IL) made both of his free throw attempts. The team had a strong lead with just over 5 minutes remaining when, Third-year, Jalen Vaughn made a jump shot and brought the score to 31-24. Christendom would go on a scoring run for the remainder of the half which would only be broken once with a 3-pointer made by Second-year, Jermaine Knaff (Quincy, IL). Third-year, Trevor Franklin (Stafford, VA) scored first for Beaver after coming out of the locker room with 4 made free-throws, which would be half of his 8 for 8 night from the line. Beaver trailed Christendom until the final 3 minutes of the game when it became a back-and-forth battle and a race to the end. Down by 2 with no time left, a foul by Christendom sent Knaff to the line where he would make both of his shots to tie the game up. Christendom would be scoreless for 3 minutes in overtime and let Beaver take a 9-point lead before the final buzzer where Beaver finished it a 5 point lead and a score of 83-78.
First-year, Ronyell Coston (Eastern Shore, VA) scored a solid 17 points for the Lions which led his team, he also had 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, and 1 block. Third-year, Trevor Franklin (Stafford, VA) played a strong game scoring 15 points, with 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals. Second-year, Jermaine Knaff (Quincy, IL) had 14 points this game, had 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. Third-year, Jalen Vaughn had 13 points this game with 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Second-year, Alex Green, score 11 points, had 1 rebound, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Fourth-year, Matt Brown (Upland, CA) scored 9points, had 5 rebounds which led the team, and had 1 block. Both First-year players, Allen Cole (King of Prussia, PA) and Ny-zir Dix (Eastern Shore, VA) scored 2 points for the team. Beaver had 23 rebounds, 10 assists, 14 steals, and 2 blocks this game.
Penn State Beaver Men's Basketball is now 6-7 overall while being 4-2 in conference. The Men's Basketball team will take the court again this Saturday, December 21st at 3pm during day 2 of their annual Holiday Tournament. They will be facing off against Bryant & Stratton – Cleveland in the Beaver Fieldhouse.
