The Beaver men's team played the second of their two Spirit Weekend matches Saturday evening, taking on Penn State Mont Alto. The conference match did not work out for Beaver, losing 76-56.
The game started in Mont Alto's favor, as they scored the first 7 points of the game. Freshman Andrew Brady put Beaver on the clock with a layup 3 minutes into the game, followed shortly by a layup from sophomore Tavarski Wardlow. Beaver made their way up on the board, coming close to tieing the game early on, but Mont Alto stayed a few steps ahead throughout.
After taking a timeout halfway through the first half, sophomore Dominique Stevenson made a 3-point jump shot, putting the game 3 points away from a tie. But Mont Alto had more luck with their 3-point attempts, quickly building their lead up again. Senior Eric Gallupe made a much needed 3-pointer later in the half, while senior DJ Austin did his part to keep his teammates focued.
As halftime came, Beaver was down 41-29. They started the second half with a determination to change things around, as Gallupe made another 3-pointer early on. The team managed to maintain control of the ball for a while, as they attempted to narrow their opponent's lead.
Beaver was down by 7 with 11 minutes left in the game. They had the stamina needed to turn things around, but they could not maintain control of the ball, putting the game in Mont Alto's favor. By the final minutes of the game, it was clear that Beaver was just going through the motions, as Mont Alto continued to build their lead. Beaver would lose the game 76-56.
The team is now 6-13 in their overall season and 3-7 in their conference matches. They will return to their home court on Tuesday night as they take on Penn State Du Bois in another conference match.
