Monaca, PA -- Beaver Makes Impressive Comeback Against York
By: Chris Rotondo
Beaver's men's basketball team made an impressive comeback Friday night when they took on Penn State York in their first of two Spirit Weekend conference matches. After trailing in the first half, Beaver came back to win the game 70-60.
The first half started with York gaining an early lead. Beaver eventually made their way onto the scoreboard thanks to a layup from junior Will Pierce. York dominated the opening minutes of the game, but in the final minutes of the half, Beaver started to build their hustle. Sophomore Dominique Stevenson led the half with multiple layups and a pair of 3-point jump shots, helping to move the team up on the scoreboard. The team worked to narrow their trail in those final minutes, trailing 34-26 at the half.
In the second half, Beaver came back with a vengence, as they worked to not only tie the game, but to put York in the dust. Stevenson and sophomore Tavarski Wardlow each made 3-pointers early in the half, narrowing the deficit between the teams. Stevenson later put the team 1 point away from a tie, though York scored shortly after.
With ten minutes left in the game, senior Eric Gallupe gained possession of the ball against an intense York offense. He made an 3-pointer that tied the game at 45. While York pushed ahead, senior DJ Austin tied the game again with another 3-pointer. Soon after, a pair of free throws from Pierce and Gallupe pushed the team ahead further. From there, the game was in Beaver's court, as they quickly pushed through with free throws and layups. The crowd was enthused as freshman Andrew Brady made a final layup with 14 seconds left in the game. Beaver was successful in turning a losing game into a winner, defeating York 70-60.
The team is now 6-12 in their overall season and 3-6 in the PSUAC conference. They will continue their Spirit Weekend matchups tomorrow afternoon as they take on Penn State Mont Alto at 4:00 p.m.
