By: Chris Rotondo
The Beaver men's team traveled to Penn State New Kensington Tuesday night as they matched off in a PSUAC conference match. After trailing in the first half, Beaver went on to win the game 67-60.
The first half started in Beaver's favor, as they gained an early 4-point lead thanks to jump shots from freshman Andrew Brady. He led the team in successful field goals throughout the game. Jump shots from sophomore Dominique Stevenson further brought the team up on the scoreboard. Halfway through the half, however, New Kensington tied the game at 12 and soon pushed ahead of Beaver. Senior Eric Gallupe made a 3-point jump shot that helped to narrow Beaver's sudden trailing. Stevenson also made a 3-pointer that brought the team 3 points away from a tie. A jump shot from sophomore Kevin Louis-Charles briefly brought the team ahead by 1, but a last second 3-pointer from New Kensington ended the half with Beaver trailing 35-33.
As the second half began, Beaver knew that they had to keep up their pace. The first few minutes of the half showed both teams tieing the game multiple times, starting with a pair of free throws from Beaver sophomore Tavarski Wardlow. A jump shot from Brady, assisted by Stevenson, suddenly put Beaver in the lead. The team worked to slowly build a wide lead against their opponent. New Kensington was briefly ahead by 1 thanks to a 3-pointer, but Gallupe and Brady each struck back with a jump shot that put Beaver in the lead once more. By the final minute, Beaver had built a considerable lead, and while New Kensington was slowly trying to work their way back, they were no match for Beaver. Senior DJ Austin made multiple free throws in the final minute of the game, pushing Beaver ahead to a 67-60 win.
The team is now 5-12 in their season and 2-6 in their conference matches. They will return home this weekend for a pair of conference matches during Penn State Beaver's Spirit Weekend. Their first game of the weekend will be Friday night against Penn State York.
