Beaver's men's basketball team played the first of two weekend PSUAC conference matches on Friday night. They traveled to Penn State Brandywine, where they fell 70-57.
As the game began, both teams showed an intense passion, making rebounds and attempting to score first. Nearly 5 minutes in, Brandywine scored first with a pair of layups. Soon after, sophomore Dominique Stevenson made a pair of free throws. Stevenson later made a jump shot that briefly put Beaver ahead by 1. Both teams went back and forth in the lead; senior DJ Austin made a 3-point jump shot that put Beaver ahead once again. Brandywine worked to come ahead, but senior Eric Gallupe made a pair of free throws that once again put Beaver in the lead. It was after that, however, that things turned, as Brandywine build up a strong lead against Beaver, using 3-pointers to their advantage. The first half ended with Beaver trailing 44-31.
As the second half began, Beaver recognized that they needed to work to maintain possession of the ball. The team slowly made their way up, as they tried to decrease the gap between the two teams. Austin made another 3-pointer that helped to bring Beaver closer within range of a lead, though Brandywine continued to strike back, though at a slower pace. With 5 minutes left in the game, freshman Andrew Brady made a layup that brought Beaver just 4 points away from tieing the game. Brady made another layup less than 2 minutes later that brought Beaver just 1 point from a tie. That would be Beaver's last shot of the night, as Brandywine used the last minutes of the game to destroy Beaver's hopes of a win. The game ended with Beaver falling to Brandywine 70-57.
The team is now 4-11 in their overall season and 1-5 in the PSUAC conference. On Saturday, they will travel to take on Penn State Lehigh Valley in another conference match.
