Mont Alto, Pa -- The Penn State Beaver basketball team took to the road to face off against conference opponent Penn State Mont Alto. Beaver came into this game off of a tough loss to Penn State York, in which the team seemed to be out played in every way. The team will look to improve quickly, as they need a win in order to have any chance of making it to the PSUAC playoffs.
The game started off with Mont Alto jumping out to an early lead in the first few minutes. However, Beaver quickly got it together and took the lead 5 minutes in thanks to a good run led by Freshman Dominique Stevenson (Rochester NY / Ithica). Beaver would hold their lead for long though, as Mont Alto came right back to life and took back their lead at the 10 minute mark of the first half. The rest of the first half was a battle between the two teams, as Beaver never let Mont Alto take a huge lead that they seemed capable of doing. At the end of the first half of play, Mont Alto was able to pull ahead by 9 as the score going into halftime was 45-36.
The second half of play was almost identical as the first, as both teams went on scoring streaks to pull the lead up and down for Mont Alto. Beaver still struggled to contain Mont Alto on offense though, and while they were able to make the game within reach at points, they never were able to overcome the deficit from halftime. In the end Beaver had dropped their second game in a row, losing by a final score of 92-72.
With their loss to Mont Alto, Beaver now holds a 9-12 overall record while dropping to 5-7 in conference play. This loss makes Beaver's chances of making the PSUAC playoffs very hard pressed, and they would need to win out in order to have any shot as of now. The team was led in this game by the efforts of Freshman Dominique Stevenson, who had a team high 19 points, and fellow Freshamn Markel Sayles (Pittsburgh, PA / Perry Traditional), who tallied 14 points and 4 rebounds in the losing effort. The team will play next on Tuesday, January 31, at Penn State Du Bois. Game time is set for 8 pm.
