Beaver Advance to USCAA Second Round
#8 Seeded Penn State Beaver downed #9 Seeded Berkley (NY) 76-86
Uniontown, PA- The Penn State Beaver men's basketball team is advancing to the second round of the USCAA National Tournament, thanks to its 76-68 win over #9 seeded Berkley (NY).
In the first half, Beaver came out on fire, building and early 9 point lead by the 12 minute mark. Berkley battled back, taking their first lead of the game (28-26), with 3 minutes left til the break. Beaver quickly regained the lead, and led at half 34-32. Senior Chris Weathers (New Brighton/New Brighton, PA) had a huge first half, scoring 17 points in the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, Beaver led the entire frame, but it was a dog fight. Not until the final minutes did Beaver extend its lead over 4. The Lions hit key free throws in the final minutes, and advanced with the 76-68 win.
It was the big three that led the way, scoring 67 of Beaver's 76 points. Sophomore Rob Agurs (Penn Hills/Pittsburgh, PA) went 5 for 9 from the field and 16 of 22 from the charity stripe to finish with a game high 26 points. Weather's finished with 25 points while Senior guard Nick Miller (Beaver Falls/Beaver Falls, PA) added 16.
Beaver (20-7) will face #1 seeded Central Maine on Thursday in the second round of the USCAA National Tournament. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in the Maltho gym on the campus of Penn State Fayette.
