Lions defeat Division III Grove City College
Beaver wins 86-68 over the Wolverines.
Monaca, PA -- In their first game since returning home from Florida, the Lions earned a victory over Grove City College.
After a neck and neck start where Beaver got their first lead of the game at the 16:47 mark on a Nick Miller (Beaver Falls, PA/Beaver Falls) 3-pointer to make the score 10-8. Over the next several minutes of play, Beaver was able to battle to increase their lead to 11 points (26-11) on a jump shot by Chris Weathers (New Brighton, PA/New Brighton) at 9:15. For the remainder of the first half Beaver maintained a comfortable lead and went into halftime with the score 39-34.
In the second half Grove City cut Beaver's lead to 6 points at 11:16, but the surge wasn't enough. Within three minutes Beaver had their lead back to 10 points and from there continued to press and shut down the Wolverine offense. Both Weathers and Tiere Phillips (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills) played stiff defense with 3 steals a piece in the game. The Lions continued to score at will and were close to securing a 20 point lead several times late in the game, but nonetheless finished the game strong and won by a final score of 86-69.
The leading scorers for the Lions were Nick Miller and Chris Weathers who both had 26, followed by Rob Agurs (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills) who had 19. Those three combined accounted for over 80% of the teams scoring effort. With this victory, Beaver increased their record to 10-3 overall and will take the court again on January 18th when they travel to Penn State Dubois to continue PSAUC competition.
