Beaver holds off New Kensington, remains first in PSUAC

Monaca, PA - The Penn State Beaver men's basketball team remained in the top of the PSUAC West Division when it defeated Penn State New Kensington, 88-62, on Wednesday night. Beaver is now 12-1 in the conference.
In the first half, the teams rallied back and forth until Beaver went on a run with ten minutes left. An offensive rebound by freshman Chris Weathers (New Brighton High School/New Brighton, PA) and a kick-out to freshman Nick Miller (Beaver Falls High School/Beaver Falls, PA) for a 3-pointer gave Beaver an 8-point lead. Junior Tony Houghton (Perry Traditional Academy/Pittsburgh, PA) hit a 3-pointer as well to give Beaver a solid 11-point advantage going into the break.
In the second half, Beaver came on strong and held a 20-point lead for the remainder of the game.
Four of Beaver's starters reached double figures, and the fifth, Nick Miller, almost had a double-double by scoring 9 points and distributing nine assists for the team. Senior David McGarry (Poland High School/Poland, OH) was the high scorer with 14 points, followed by senior Billy Stoughton (Slippery Rock High School/Slippery Rock, PA) who added 13.
Sophomore Rich Gaston (Shenango High School/New Castle, PA) added 12 points, and Houghton neared a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
On Saturday, Feb. 12, the men will travel to take on Penn State Greater Allegheny in a PSUAC game at 3:00 p.m. On Sunday, Feb. 13, Beaver will host Penn College at 2:00 p.m.
