By Noelle Miloszewski
Monaca, PA - On Sunday, Nov. 15, the Penn State Beaver Nittany Lions went 2-0 for the weekend after defeating Williamson Trade School, 63-61, in a rematch of last year's DII USCAA National Championship game.
The Lions put forth a very strong defensive effort and led by one point at the half, 31-30, despite foul trouble. In the second half, Beaver and Williamson changed leads several times as the score remained close. With about 25 seconds left, Williamson had control of the ball, down by two, and managed to get an open three point attempt in the corner at the buzzer, but the shot was just off the mark, giving Beaver the Tournament Championship.
High scorers for the Lions were sophomore Anthony McPherson (Center High School, Aliquippa, PA) with 11 points, and sophomore Tony Houghton (Perry Traditional Academy, Pittsburgh, PA) with 10.
Senior Zack Fetchin (Hopewell High School, Aliquippa, PA) was chosen for All-Tournament Team and McPherson was named Tournament Most Valuable Player.
The Lions are now 2-0 and return to the court at 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 20 for the first round of the La Roche College CRONS Tournament.
