Beaver Finishes on Wrong End of Thriller
Uniontown, PA - On Thursday, March 4, the Penn State Beaver Nittany Lions basketball team entered the USCAA Tournament in a thrilling game against the World Harvest Bible College Warriors that ended in defeat for the Lions, 61-60.
Beaver opened the scoring, but neither team pulled away as they traded baskets early. Beaver trailed at halftime, 28-24, but got busy in the second half by building a 10-point lead by the 10 minute mark. However, the Warriors chipped at the lead and tied the game at 50-50 with 4 minutes remaining.
The Warriors took a 3-point lead with 1 minute left. Beaver Lion Anthony McPherson (Center High School, Monaca, PA) drove the lane with 48 seconds left and hit a lay-up to pull within 1 point. The defense held, and Beaver had the ball with 14 seconds left to tie the game. After a missed foul shot, Beaver had 2.3 seconds left for a final shot that banked off the glass, then the front of the rim, resulting in the loss for the Lions.
Beaver seniors Zach Fetchin and Tim Kubis (Hopewell High School, Aliquippa, PA) led the scoring with 15 points each while McPherson added 12 points.
The Beaver Nittany Lions are 20-8 and will compete for fifth place when they take on Penn State Wilkes-Barre at 6:00 p.m., Friday, March 5.
