Evan Pinchot - The Penn State Beaver baseball team, who have struggled to claim their first conference win so far this season, fell to PSUAC rival Penn State Fayette on Wednesday evening, losing both games of a double-header.
Game one against Fayette was their closest game so far this young season, as Beaver's pitching was looking great in this matchup. With Senior Justyn Francona (New Brighton, Pa / New Brighton High School) starting out the game with 3 scoreless innings on the mound, Beaver was able to strike first in the second inning for a run off of an error by Fayette. However, their 1-0 lead wouldn't last long, as Fayette would string together 3 runs in the fourth inning off of a costly error by Beaver. Even as Francona continued to shut out Fayette through the fifth and sixth innings, Beaver was unable to tallying enough runs to come back in this game, as they would end up falling by a final score of 3-2.
Game two turned out to be a much different story, as it was the pitching for Beaver that would fail them in this one. After a scoreless first inning for both teams, Fayette's bats came alive in the second, third and fourth innings, tacking on a total of 12 runs during that span. With Beaver's struggles at the plate carrying over from the first game, this deficit was too much for Beaver to came back from, as they would only be able to muster up a single run in the third inning of this game. After 5 innings the game would end with Beaver taking home another loss by a final score of 12-1.
In their loss 2 losses today one player, Senior Justyn Francona, seemed to stand out as the team's top preformer. Francona shined on the mound in game one, striking out 5 while only allowing 1 earned run through 6 innings of work, while also knocking in Beaver's only run at the plate in game two of the day's doubleheader.
With their losses today, Beaver now stands with a 2-7 overall record, while remaining winless at 0-7 in conference play. Beaver will look to finally get their season on track when they return to action this Wednesday to take on Penn State New Kensington. This will be a home game for Beaver, and game time is set for 3 pm.
