Evan Pinchot - The Penn State Beaver baseball team squared off against Penn State Greater Allegheny for a Saturday doubleheader, in which Beaver would end up falling short in both games.
Game one of the day's doubleheader started off slow for both teams, as it would take until the third inning for either team to get on the board. However, once the levee broke in the third inning it seemed as the scoring wouldn't stop. It was Greater Allegheny who would take the first lead of the game, and it was one that they wouldn't give back either. After giving up a 6-1 lead in the third, it would be Beaver's struggles defensively that would be their ultimate downfall, as they not only allowed 13 hits throughout the game, but the team also tallied 4 errors to add on to their defensive woes. When it was all said and done, it was Greater Allegheny who would walk away victorious in this one, winning by a final score of 11-1.
Game two of the day's doubleheader seemed to be the same story for both team, as the first their innings were quiet this time around. Both Greater Allegheny and Beaver looked dominant on the mound to start this game out. Senior Scott Hughes (Aliquippa, Pa / Central Valley), put in a solid first 3 innings, as he would strike out 5 batters in the game before struggling in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, it would be Greater Allegheny that would strike first, and once again they would take a lead that they would not give back. After giving up 2 runs in the fourth inning, Beaver would let up another 10 runs in the fifth and sixth innings, eventually ending the game after six innings played and losing by a final score of 12-1.
After losing both games of the doubleheader today, Beaver now stands at 2-4 overall with an 0-4 conference record. With a strong first 3 innings of his game 2 start, which included 5 strikeouts through 5 innings, as well as having Beaver's only RBI today, Senior Scott Hughes stands out as today's top performer. Beaver also benefitted in game one from Freshmen Trevor Freeman (Dexter, Mi / Dexter High School), who had Beaver's only 2 hit performance in either game of their doubleheader, going 2-3 with 2 singles in game one. Beaver will look to get back on track after losing 3 straight games on Tuesday, March 30, at Penn State Mont Alto. Game time is set for 3 pm.
