DU BOIS, Pa. — The Penn State Beaver men's baseball team fell to PSUAC rival Penn State Du Bois, 2-0 to start the series on Monday night.
The Lions fell 12-5 in game one and 11-1 in game two.
Du Bois built up a 2-0 lead over the Lions by the end of the second inning, but the Lions forged a comeback in the top of the third, starting sophomore Stefan Romaniuk (Alpha/Notre Dame) got to second on a balk by the pitcher, prompting freshman Trey Luffy (Baldwin) to score with two outs on the board (2-1). Junior Scott Hughes (Aliquippa/Central Valley) then singled-in Romaniuk to tie the game. The Lions then got their bases loaded, and freshman Jacob Beck (Beaver) then drove-in 2 RBI; Junior Rob Kolessar (Sewickley/Quaker Valley) and freshman Christian James (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) to score, giving the Lions their first lead of the game (4-2). But the lead was short-lived as Du Bois cut it to one in the fourth followed by a seven-run inning in the bottom of the fifth (12-4) but put the Lions in an eight-run hole. While the Lions earned a fifth run in the seventh, it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit, and they lost game one 12-5.
In game one, Beck led Beaver in RBIs, earning 2, while Romaniuk, who went 2 for 3 with two runs.
Beaver fared no better in the game two of the Du Bois doubleheader, as Romaniuk singled-in freshman Johnny Rowland (Wellsboro) for Beaver's only run of the game in the top of the third while Du Bois had another double-digit game with 11 runs. The Lions fell 11-1 in game two.
In game two, Romaniuk led Beaver with 1 RBI and went 1 for 3 at bat followed by Rowland, who went 1 for 2 with one run.
