It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon, as Beaver took to their home field in Monaca, Pa. Coming off of a double-header win, Beaver looked to keep the streak going.
Beaver set the tone early defensively as Junior Matt Sweikowski controlled the game and the momentum with his consistent pitching. In 4 innings, Sweikowski faced 14 batters, recorded 4 strikeouts all while only allowing only two hits from his opponent, making it nearly impossible for Scranton to score.
Offensively Beaver produced well as a team. They started swinging early and never let up as they controlled the scoreboard the entire game producing 14 runs in 5 innings.
Jake Debo contributed greatly with a double, a single and a homerun which put the crowd and his teammates into a frenzy. Nick Casasanta produced adding a triple and a single of his own.
Due to their huge lead, Beaver was able to end this one in 5 innings with a final score of 14-1.
The second game of our double header started off differently than the first.
Unlike the previous game, Worhington Scranton came ready to play as they kept the game close for the first 5 innings.
However, the breaking point came in the 5th inning when Beaver completed 2 bunt singles from freshmen Vinnie Ribar and Shawn Shaner. All throughout the game you could hear Beaver Head Coach Jack Hilfinger chanting " we need to get on base, we need to get some players on base".
And so they did.
After an infield single from Blaise McCarty, the Lions accomplished their goal and loaded all the bases. Rob Trhlin provided a huge spark for Beaver after stealing 3rd base and scoring, causing his whole team to celebrate in excitement.
Beaver was responsible for 6 runs in the 5th inning, which catapulted them to the win. Beaver eventually went on to win the game in 7 innings with a final score of 9-1.
Up next Coach Hilfinger and his Lions will be on the road against Penn State Fayette Thursday, April 14th for a conference double header at 2 pm.
