Baseball Falls to Montreat in Vero Beach, FL
Lions lose by a final score of 9-4.
Vero Beach, FL -- Penn State Beaver falls to Montreat College by a final score of 9-4.
In their only game of the day, Beaver faced Montreat College of North Carolina. The Lions opened the scoring in their first at bat of the game as freshman, Jake Debo (New Brighton, PA / New Brighton) hit an RBI single scoring Rob Trhlin (Chesterland, OH / West Geauga) who singled earlier in the inning, to take an early 1-0 lead. The Cavaliers quickly answered in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own, then adding two additional runs in the bottom of the second inning to bring the score to 5-1.
Beaver's Debo again tried to get the offense rolling in the top of the third inning as he crushed a lead off home run, his first of the season. Unfortunately, his early spark wasn't enough to narrow the deficit further.
With Montreat adding an additional 2 runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth (9-2), Beaver made their final push in the top of the seventh inning. The lead off batter, Blaise McCarty (Beaver Falls, PA / Riverside) singled, followed by Trhlin who also singled to put two runners on. As the next two batters resulted in outs, the Lions rallied with two outs. Sophomore, Derek Bozic (Beaver Falls, PA / Beaver Falls) stepped to the plate with confidence and hit a 2 RBI double to narrow Montreats lead to five. But just like the third inning, Beaver wasn't able to hang on to the momentum as they would fall by a final score of 9-4 bringing their overall record to 1-4.
Leading the Lions on offesne was Trhlin who went 3 for 4. He was followed by Debo who went 2 for 3 with a homerun.
On the mound for Beaver were Nick Casasanta (Moon Twp, PA / Moon) and Andrew Emes (New Brighton, PA / New Brighton) who each threw three innings.
Beaver returns to action to tomorrow when they take on Rochester College and St. Lawrence.
