Vero Beach, Fl. -- In a double header with Norwich University, Beaver dropped both games in their second day of action in Vero Beach.
In game one, Norwich built a 14 run lead by the end of the fourth inning. In the fifth inning Beaver showed it's first sign of offense as Noah Saxon (Brownsville, PA / Brownsville) scored on an RBI ground out by Ashton McGinnis (Ford City, PA / Ford City) to prevent the shutout.
Beaver, as the home team, tried to capitalized on their last at bat in the bottom of the seventh as Blaise McCarty (Beaver Falls, PA / Riverside) singled and then advanced to second on a fielding error allowing Matt Capo (Moon Township, PA / Moon) to reach first. With two runners on, McGinnis singled to load the bases. Things looked promising as senior, Stephen Galmarini (New Castle, PA / Union) stepped to the plate and singled to left to score McCarty. On an error by the left fielder, Capo was able to score giving Beaver some momentum, but the pitching of Norwich proved to be too much as they struck out the final two batters for Beaver.
Leading the offense for Beaver was Galmarini who went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
In game two of the double header, Beaver's pitching and defense was able to keep the offense of Norwich at bay until the bottom of the fourth, when they allowed two runs. The Lions quickly answered in the top of the 5th inning, however.
With one out and one runner on, freshman William Snyder ( ) hit an RBI triple to get things started. He was followed by Saxon who singled to score Snyder before Norwich was able to get their second out of the inning. With life, rallying on two outs, Saxon used his speed on the basepaths to steal second and advance to third on a past ball. This put him in perfect position for senior, Rob Trhlin (Rochester, PA / Rochester) who singled to center field to earn the RBI as well as a stolen base with McGinnis at the plate. Beaver was taking full advantage of their speed as McGinnis was able to leg out a single to advance Trhlin and then steal second to put two runners in scoring position. Derek Jessep was the next batter to offer up an RBI single, scoring both Trhlin and McGinnis to give Beaver a 5-2 lead at the end of the fifth.
Despite the momentum Beaver seemed to have, Norwich answered with five runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning (7-5) and would go on to win the game by a final score of 7-5.
Beaver now sits at 1-3 on the week and will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. as they are slated to face Montreat University.
