Beaver splits with Penn College
Beaver wins game one, 9-8, but falls in game two, 2-1.
Monaca, PA – Beaver splits with Penn College in a PSUAC double header on senior day.
Prior to this afternoon's games, Beavers' two seniors, Grant Scott (Sewickley, PA/Ann Arbor Piorneer) and Tyler Schuster (Beaver Falls, PA/Beaver Falls) were recognized during a brief presentation which highlighted their career's here at Penn State Beaver.
In game one of the afternoon, Penn College jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four and a half innings of play. In the bottom of the fourth inning the bats came alive for Beaver as the first five batters in the inning reached base safely including senior, Grant Scott who had an RBI double. With no outs and 2 runs in their favor, Beaver's Tyler Schuster, who was the starting pitcher, struck out on what he thought was a bad third strike call and was tossed from the game for confronting the umpire. This spark ignited the offense as Albert Araiza (Phoenix, AZ/St. Mary's) hit a 2 RBI single, followed by back to back doubles by Austin Logan (Beaver, PA/Beaver) and Matt Rose (Beaver, PA/Beaver) to put the Lions up 8-5 over the Wildcats. Despite giving up runs in the fifth and sixth innings, Beaver was able to hang on to their lead and win by a final score of 9-8 to bump their PSUAC record to 9-4.
Leading the offense in the game was Derek Bozic (Beaver Falls, PA/Beaver Falls) and Araiza who both went 2 for 3 as well as 5 players who hit a double in the game.
On the mound to start was Schuster who threw 4 innings before being ejected from the game. In his relief was Stephen Galmarini (New Castle, PA/Union) who threw three innings and earned the win.
Game two, was a fast paced game as both teams exchanged quick defensive innings through the first three at bats on each side. It wasn't until the fourth inning when Penn College finally opened the scoring in the game and took a 1-0 lead and then increased their lead by an additional run in the top of the sixth. Down 2-0, Beaver answered with their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on a single from Nick Casasanta (Moon Twp., PA/Moon) that scored Tyler Thellman (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) who had singled earlier in the inning. Unfortunately, this would be the only scoring Beaver would do in the game as they fell to Penn College by a final score of 2-1.
On the mound was Matt Sweikowski (Zelienople, PA/Seneca Valley) who threw all seven innings giving up 8 hits and striking out four.
Beaver is now 9-5 in the PSUAC and is scheduled to face rival Penn State Greater Allegheny on Tuesday, April 22nd at Pullman Park in Butler, PA.
