Uniontown, PA - On a day that featured a plethora of precipitation, including rain, snow, sleet and hail, the Penn State Beaver baseball team split a doubleheader with Penn State Fayette with finals of 2-1 in game one, a Fayette victory and 10-9, a Beaver win.
Game one was a pitchers' duel between Tyler Schuster (Beaver Falls, Beaver Falls High School)) of Beaver and Sam Beucher of Fayette. Schuster pitched a gem, allowing just one hit the contest, however that one hit resulted in a two-run home run that would prove to be the difference. Schuster threw 6 innings, giving up two runs and only the one hit while striking out nine. The offense for Beaver was quiet, only compiling five hits in game one. The few highlights included two hits for Andrew DiPietrantonio (Beaver, Beaver) and a solo home run from Cory Wagner (Monaca, Center).
Game two was an improvement for the Beaver offense as they collected 10 hits in the game. Beaver was led offensively by Mike Karas (Imperial, West Allegheny), Garrett Covalt (Aliquippa, Hopewell) and DiPietrantonio who each finished with two hits. Zack DelTurco (Monaca, Monaca) finished the game with three RBI and DiPietrantonio drove in two runs. DelTurco started the game on the hill for Beaver and went five strong innings giving up no earned runs on three hits while striking out six. This led to Vinny Beatty (Rochester, Rochester) closing the 10-9 victory with a save.
The split will take Beaver's PSUAC conference record to 6-2 and they will travel back home to play conference teams Penn State Mont Alto on Saturday with games starting at 2 and 4, and Penn State York on Sunday.
