Williamsport, PA - On a rainy day in Williamsport, Penn State Beaver split a doubleheader win Penn College. Penn won the first game 6-4 and Beaver won game two 3-2.
In the first game, Zack DelTurco (Monaca, Monaca High School) got the start on the mound and went the complete game, giving up 2 earned runs on just two hits and striking out 5. Unfortunately for DelTurco, Beaver had a poor defensive performance, committing four errors in the contest. The Beaver offense got going in the first when Alex Filippi (Aliquippa, Center) scored on a Markus Allen (New Castle, Union) double. They scored again in the second inning when Andrew DiPietrantonio (Beaver, Beaver) scored on an and twice more in the third when DelTurco tripled and later scored on a Tom Lewis (Aliquippa, Hopewell) single while Lewis would eventually score on a passed ball. That offense would not be enough in game one and Beaver fell 6-4. Lewis finished the contest with two hits.
In game two, on his 20th birthday, Tyler Schuster (Beaver Falls, Beaver Falls) threw a complete game gem, allowing just two runs on six hits and struck out three as Beaver won the game 3-2. The defense was much improved in game two as Beaver did not commit any errors. The offense was scarce, with Beaver only having two hits, but the timely hits were the difference. In the fourth inning, Lewis and Jimmy Musgrave (Economy, Ambridge) walked and both scored on a Cory Wagner (Monaca, Center) double. Beaver then scored again in the seventh inning when the game was tied at two. DiPietrantonio led off the inning with a walk and after a Mike Karas (Imperial, West Allegheny) moved him to second base with a sacrifice bunt, Filippi brought home the winning run with a RBI single.
The results of the day brought Beaver's record to 8-9 overall and a PSUAC conference record to 3-1. Beaver will travel to Penn State Wilkes-Barre on Monday with game times starting at 12 and 2.
