The Penn State Beaver Baseball Team earned a win and a rare tie with Penn State Wilkes-Barre this weekend.
In game one, Beaver pounded out 14 hits in 5 innings as Beaver induced the mercy rule in a 19-2 romp over their PSUAC counterpart.
Beaver scored three runs in the 1st inning and never looked back as they added three more in the 2ndinning and 3rd innings and five each in the 4th and 5th innings.
In the win, Alex Filippi (Center/Monaca, PA) went 3-3, scored five runs and grabbed two stolen bases in the leadoff spot. Garrett Colvalt (Hopwell/Aliquippa, PA) also went 3-3 with three runs scored, drove in five RBI's, including a home run. Freshman Andy DiPietrantonio (Beaver/Beaver, PA) went 2-3 with two doubles, six RBI's and three runs scored.
In game two, both the weather and Penn State Wilkes-Barre came to life. Wilkes-Barre scored four runs in the 1st inning, as Beaver played catch-up throughout. Down, 4-1 in the 4th inning, Sophomore Marcus Allen (Union/New Castle) hit a two run homer to cut the Wilkes-Barre lead to 4-3. Beaver scored one in the 5th to tie the game at 4-4, although Wilkes-Barre responded by scoring a run of their own in the 5th, to give Wilkes-Barre a 5-4 lead.
With the rain coming down, Beaver manufactured an important run with two outs to tie the game at five apiece. Unfortunately, the game was declared a tie when the final out of the game was recorded by Beaver.
With the win and tie, Beaver is now 10-13-1 overall (10-3-1 PSUAC) and now focuses on PSUAC rival Penn State Greater Allegheny as they faceoff at 1 p.m. at Butler's Pullman Park on Tuesday, April 19, 2011.
