Media, PA - The Penn State Beaver Baseball Team split an important doubleheader to Penn State Brandywine as Beaver heads down the home stretch of its conference schedule.
The first game was a defensive affair as both teams struggled to get on base. Beaver's Tyler Schuster proved to be too much for the Brandywine bats as he threw a complete game shutout and allowed just four hits. Schuster recorded seven strikeouts as well.
Beaver's themselves could only muster seven hits in the game, however, they grinded out a lone run in the 7th inning and held on for the 1-0 win. Freshman Andy DiPietrantonio (Beaver/Beaver, PA) led the 7th off with a single but was forced out on a fielder's choice by Alex Filippi (Center/Monaca, PA). Filippi then was caught stealing, leaving Beaver's hope rather bleak. Nevertheless, Beaver followed with a walk and a single and Cory Wagner (Center/Monaca, PA) hit the eventual game winning double to score Garrett Colvalt (Hopewell/Aliquippa, PA).
Wagner went 2-4 in the game and Zack DelTurco (Monaca/Monaca, PA) went an impressive 4-4 and was just a home run shy of the cycle (two singles, double, triple).
In game two, both offenses came to play. Beaver carried their momentum from the game one and led 4-0 after the 1st inning, on Adam Falkowski's (Blackhawk/Beaver Falls, PA) mammoth Grand Slam. However, Brandywine scored one run in the 2nd inning and erupted for six runs in the 3rd inning, to give Brandywine a lead they would not surrender. The teams traded runs in the 4th and 5thinnings, as Brandywine held on for a 10-7 victory.
In the loss, Beaver smacked three home runs, led by Falkowski's grand slam, followed by Jim Musgrave's (Ambridge/Ambridge, PA) two-run shot & Marcus Allen's (Union/New Castle, PA) solo homer.
Beaver improves to 9-3 in the PSUAC (9-13 overall) and head north to play Penn State Wilkes-Barre in another doubleheader, tomorrow at 9:30 am in an effort to beat the incoming inclement weather.
