Baseball Season Opens with Two Wins
On Sunday, Sept. 14 the Penn State Beaver Nittany Lions baseball team opened the 2008-2009 season at home with two PSUAC wins over Penn State New Kensington, 12-0 and 12-2.
In game one, Beaver pulled away early, scoring seven in the bottom of the first. Beaver added one in the second and third and three more in the fourth for the win.
Junior Joe Scherer (Quaker Valley High School) pitched three no-hit, shut-out innings, struck out seven, and walked none earning his first win of the season. Junior Cody Moldovan (Ellwood City High School) led the way offensively with two hits, a double, and four RBIs while junior Ryan Raraigh (Riverside High School) had two hits, a double, and two RBI's. Senior Jeff Trojan scored a double and freshman Don Sonsini (Aliquippa High School) had two singles.
In game two, New Kensington struck first when they plated one in the first inning. They held onto their 1-0 lead until the third inning when Beaver scored seven and took a commanding lead. New Ken scored one in the fourth, bringing the game to 7-2 before Beaver responded with three more in the fourth and two more in the fifth to win the game.
Freshman Bryan Strehl (Beaver Falls High School) pitched four solid innings, gave up three hits, three walks, two earned runs, and struck out three to earn the first win of his collegiate career. Offensively, Scherer had four hits, three doubles, two runs, and drove in three runs. Sophomore Huston Lorenzo (Miami, Fl) added three hits, a double, two runs, and three RBIs.
Beaver is 2-0 in the PSUAC and 2-0 overall. The Lions return to action at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 17 when they travel to Penn State Fayette for a make-up game.
