Beaver Sweeps Robert Morris in Big Come-back Win
There have been a lot of big wins this past year on the Beaver Falls High School baseball field. With the BFHS team making it deep into the WPIAL playoffs and the Legion team following that up with winning the Beaver County Legion Championship, the field has seen plenty of action. Penn State Beaver's first visit was no exception.
In game one, Beaver built a 7-2 lead after 2 innings before RMU scratched its way back into it, pulling within 1 run in the fifth and bringing the score to 8-7. Beaver added 2 more insurance runs in the sixth. RMU scored a run in the seventh bringing the final score to 10-8. Freshman AJ Wargo pitched 2 innings, gave up 3 hits, and walked 2 to earn the win. Freshman Jake Gram (Louisville, OH) pitched the seventh to earn his first career save. Offensively, Beaver was led by 3 hits, including a solo home run in the fourth by Trojan. Senior Pat Ringel (Sto-Rox High School) and sophomore Greg Frederick (Quaker Valley High School) added 2 hits as well. Trojan, Thomson, Frederick, and sophomore Joe Scherer (Quaker Valley High School) each drove in 2 runs.
In game two of the two-game sweep, Beaver blew a 5-2 lead, giving Robert Morris University 3 unearned runs to tie the score at 5-5 before giving them three more runs in the top of the seventh before the Beaver Lions went to work in the bottom half. With 1 out, sophomore Jimmy Leo (Monaca High School) and senior Jeff Trojan (Rochester High School) started the rally off with back-to-back singles. RMU gave 2 back to Beaver to keep the inning rolling. All of this set the table for senior Ian Thomson's (Hopewell High School) walk-off single to complete the rally and the sweep. Ten players recorded at least 1 hit in the 12-hit attack. Frederick and Leo recorded 2 hits in the victory, and Thomson and Scherer each drove in 2 runs. Freshman Reed Schwertz (Freedom High School) pitched 2 innings, gave up 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6 when they travel to Williamsport to take on Penn College for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Then they'll travel to take on Penn State Greater Allegheny on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m.
