Beaver Lions Split with PS Fayette
The Penn State Beaver Nittany Lions baseball team traveled to Penn State Fayette on Saturday, April 19 and came home with a win and a loss, 5-1 and 7-6.
In the first game, Beaver scored in the first, second, and fourth to build a 4-0 lead, added an insurance run in the seventh, and took the game.
In the win, sophomore Greg Frederick (Quaker Valley High School) pitched seven innings, giving up five hits, walking two, and striking out six. Frederick and sophomore Joe Scherer (Quaker Valley) doubled in the win.
In game two, Beaver struck first, plating one in the top of the first inning. Fayette took the lead in the fouth, erupting with four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Beaver tied it in the top of the sixth with three runs, but Fayette pulled ahead by one, scoring one in the bottom of the sixth. Beaver took the lead in the seventh, scoring twice to put the score at 6-5. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Fayette rallied for the win, scoring two runs.
In the loss, Frederick pitched one inning in relief to be tagged with his first conference loss in two years. Offensively, sophomore Ryan Raraigh (Riverside High School), freshman Jake Ellis (Seneca Valley High School), and senior Jeff Trojan (Rochester High School) each had two hits in the loss. Frederick and Raraigh also doubled in the game.
Beaver is now 17-7 overall and 14-4 in the PSUAC with two games to play. They're tied with Penn College for first place. Beaver will play their final two PSUAC games on Wednesday, April 23 when they host Penn State Greater Allegheny at 2 p.m..
