Lions Take Two from Chestnut Hill
On Tuesday, March 11 the Penn State Beaver Nittany Lions baseball team brought its spring record to 3-1 when they defeated Chestnut Hill College, 6-1 and 12-10, in a doubleheader in Fort Pierce, Florida.
In game one, sophomore Joe Scherer (Quaker Valley High School) pitched seven strong innings, giving up only one run, three hits, walking one, and striking out nine. Chestnut Hill scored first with their lone run in the top of the fourth. Beaver answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Beaver picked up insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Offensively, seniors Pat Ringel (Sto-Rox High School) and Jeff Trojan (Rochester High School) each had two hits. Trojan knocked in two RBIs.
Game two wasn't as easy for the Lions. Chestnut Hill struck out early, putting up a four-spot in the first. Beaver came back with one in the second and three in the third to tie the game, 4-4. Chestnut Hill crossed the plate three times in the bottom of the inning, but Beaver brought the score to 7-7 in the top of the fourth. The Lions scored five in the sixth and appeared to wrap up the game at 12-7. In the bottom of the seventh, Chesnut Hill rallied by scoring three before leaving the tie run on first base, but Beaver held on for the 12-10 win.
Ringel started the second game on the mound. He pitched six-plus innings, gave up seven hits, had three earned runs, walked six, and struck out seven. Sophomore Greg Frederick (Quaker Valley High School) pitched in the seventh to earn the save. Offensively, sophomore Ryan Raraigh (Riverside High School) led the way with four hits and five RBIs. Frederick added three hits and two RBIs while Ringel and freshman Huston Lorenzo (Miami, Fl) each added two hits.
Beaver returns to action, 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 13 when they take on New York's Nyack College in Fort Pierce, Florida.
