Butler Sweeps Beaver Lions
On Tuesday, Sept. 25 Butler County Community College defeated the Penn State Beaver Nittany Lions baseball team in two games, 7-6 and 8-5.
In game one, Beaver fell behind early and gave up 3 runs in the first inning. The Lions cut it to 3-2 in the top of the third before taking the lead in the forth, scoring four runs and pulling ahead, 6-3. Butler came back with two of their own in the bottom of the fourth and tied it in the sixth, scoring one run. Butler sealed the win in the bottom of the seventh when they scored a run in their final at-bat.
Freshman Jake Ellis (Seneca Valley High School) took the loss when he pitched 3 innings, gave up 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. In the loss, sophomore Jimmy Leo (Monaca High School) went deep, and senior Ian Thomson (Hopewell High School) had a double.
In game two, Butler broke out the bats early, scoring 7 unanswered runs in the first 2 innings. Beaver went on to a 5-1 run, but it was too little too late. Butler held on for the win, 8-5.
Beaver sophomore Joe Scherer (Quaker Valley High School) took the loss when he pitched 2 innings and gave up 9 hits while striking out two. Offensively, senior Jeff Trojan (Rochester High School) and Thomson hit home runs in the loss. Trojan, Thomson, and freshman Ben Sladick (Western Beaver High School) each had 2 hits for the Lions.
Beaver is now 6-0 in the PSUAC and 7-3 overall. Up next for the Lions is a doubleheader on Saturday, Sept. 29 and Sunday, Sept. 30 when they take on Penn State Worthington-Scranton at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Penn State Wilkes-Barre on Sunday at 1 p.m.
