Beaver Advances to PSUAC Semifinals After Defeating Fayette
Monaca, PA - The reigning champs are back in action taking on Penn State Fayette in the Quarterfinals of the PSUAC Championship Tournament. Beaver had a rough start to last season, and ended up working their way to the top and won the PSUAC Championship. They are looking to win their third championship in a row this year after having a phenominal regular season. During the regular season, Beaver had defeated Fayette twice, and looked forward to defeating them for a third time and advancing to the semifinals.
The first quarter of the game started off rough. Both teams started off slow and could not get a basket. After two minutes, Beaver was finally able to score and get the game going. Fayette responded with a free-throw and a layup shortly after. The game remained close and the quarter ended with Beaver scoring 13 points and Fayette scoring 8. The second quarter was not much better for either team. Fayette managed to score the first basket of the game, and Beaver responded shortly after. Although Beaver was in the lead, they were not playing to their full potential. By the end of the half, Beaver managed to only score 10 points in the quarter and held Fayette to scoring 8 more points. Going into the locker rooms, Beaver was up 23-16.
Fayette started the third quarter going on a 7-0 run which would tie the game just four minutes into the quarter. Beaver responded with an 8-0 run of their own and was back in the lead. The game still remained close, but Beaver did not give up their lead. Beaver managed to score 14 points and Fayette put up 16 points. Beaver closed the third quarter up 37-32. Beaver was ready to put the game away in the fourth quarter. The first half of the last quarter remained close, but Beaver put away Fayette quickly. After forcing a Fayette player to foul out, Beaver was putting up buckets back-to-back. Beaver scored 21 points and allowed Fayette to score only 8 points. Beaver sent Fayette home defeating them 58-40 and move onto to the next round of the tournament.
Freshman Daniela Guzamn (Plainview, TX) came out on top for Beaver today finishing with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. Sophomore Kiera Baker (Houston, TX) was also a key player finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. Junior Kyra Seggewiss (Calgary Alberta, Canada) finished with 10 points, 4 steals, 3 assists, and 5 rebounds.
After the Beaver's win today, they celebrated Coach Tim Moore's 200th career win as the coach for the Women's Basketball program. Coach Moore has won the USCAA National Championship 2 times and has won the PSUAC Championship 9 times.
Beaver will be back at home for the semifinals taking place on March 1st or March 2nd. The time will be announced so stay up to date at beaverathletics.com!
