Penn State New Kensington Sweeps Opening Day with Dominant Game 2 Victory
New Kensington, PA – Penn State New Kensington capped off a stellar Opening Day with a resounding 14-4 win over Penn State Beaver in Game 2 of their doubleheader. A relentless offensive attack and strong pitching secured the sweep for New Kensington.
Penn State Beaver struck first, scoring twice in the top of the first inning. Aaron Stribling stole second while Benjamin Ogle stole home for the first run, followed by an RBI single from Justin Lambert to make it 2-0.
However, Penn State New Kensington wasted no time responding, erupting for an eight-run bottom half of the inning. Vaughn Gallicano, Miguel Garcia, and Bryan Calderon delivered key hits, with Calderon driving in two on a double. Chris Magnee reached on an error that brought home two more runs, and Gallicano capped off the frame with a two-run double to put New Kensington ahead 8-2.
Beaver managed to trim the deficit to 8-3 in the second when Ryan Coulombe scored on a fielding error. Calderon struck again in the bottom of the inning, launching a two-run homer to extend the lead to 10-3. Stribling answered back with a solo home run for Beaver in the third, making it 10-4, but that was as close as they would get.
New Kensington added two more runs in the fourth, courtesy of a two-run single from Matt Hodgins. Miguel Garcia sealed the victory in the fifth with a two-run homer, invoking the mercy rule at 14-4.
On the mound, Nathan Mecke (1-0) earned the win, pitching 3.1 innings while allowing four runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Ken Boyle closed it out with 1.2 perfect innings, shutting down Beaver's offense.
With this dominant performance, Penn State New Kensington starts the season 2-0, carrying strong momentum into their next matchup.
