New Kensington Drops Doubleheader to Beaver

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. - New Kensington softball fell to Penn State Beaver Tuesday afternoon in their final contest of the regular season. 

Penn State Beaver had a quick start, scoring two runs in the first followed by four more in the second. They managed a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth to get ahead by 10. New Kensington did not score any runs in the contest for Beaver to finish on top 10-0. 

In the second game, Penn State Beaver was the first to score with one run in the second. They would run across twice in the third before New Kensington came back with two runs. Penn State Beaver earned two more runs in the fourth to take the 5-2 lead going into the fifth. Beaver would put up two more before New Kensington drove in the final runs of the game in the seventh. Penn State Beaver finished with the 7-4 win.

Game 1

Marissa Bruns (Gibsonburg, Ohio / Gibsonburg) started in the circle for New Kensington, throwing 3.1 innings and letting up eight runs on nine hits. Bruns walked one batter, striking out one. She was replaced by Andrea Eiler (Eau Claire, Pa. / Moniteau) who threw 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on 4 hits. She walked one, striking out two. 

The first runs of the game came off of a Beaver double to left-center. They followed up with a single to shortstop that advanced a runner into scoring position and brought in their second run. In the top of the second, Beaver singled to center field to take the 3-0 lead. They produced another RBI on a double to center field. Penn State Beaver tripled a 2 RBI to right-center to extend their lead to six. 

Beaver singled in the top of the fourth for their seventh run and contributed a double soon after to put one more run on the board. Penn State Beaver singled in the top of the fifth for another RBI followed by a single to the pitcher to take the 10-0 lead. 

The New Kensington offense was unable to drive in any runs in five innings of play. Penn State Beaver finished with the 10-0 win.

Game 2 

Andrea Eiler got the start for New Kensington in game two. She threw seven innings allowing seven runs on 14 hits. Eiler walked one batter striking out three. Beaver doubled to left field in the top of the second for the opening RBI. One inning later, Beaver singled to right-center for the 2-0 lead. 

Another single to right field brought their lead to three. Penn State New Kensington responded on an Elliott Ferrent (Punxsutawney, Pa. / Punxsutawney) single to left field for Abby Kane (Murrysville, Pa. / Franklin Regional) to score.

The women followed up with a Marissa Bruns single to left field to drive in Taylor Hill (Milford, Pa. / Deleware Valley). Beaver tripled to right-center in the top of the fourth for their fourth run of the game. They would take the 5-2 lead off of a single to left field. Two singles to left-center in the top of the fifth extended their lead by five.

A Hill single 2 RBI brought in Kane and Illeana Ramirez (Locke, N.Y. / Moravia Central), New Kensington trailing 7-4.
